8 Steps to Buying Your First Home : Step 2
Step 2 : Connecting with a Real Estate Professional
The next step to buying your first home is connecting with the right real estate professional. It seems like anywhere you look these days you see see a smiling real estate agent’s face. From park benches to bus ads, the real estate industry has perfect its ability to get in front of you. There’s about 2 million registered real estate agents in the United States. Everyone seems to have a friend or family member who’s in the business, but don’t let this fool you.
The top 20% do 80% of the business, and in my experience, it’s the top 3% that do 90% of the business. It is so important to know who you’re working with, and that they have a solid track record and experience in what you’re looking to do. It’s not a time for a favor, you have to make sure you pick the right person to work with.
Be sure to interview and ask the professionals you’re thinking of working with questions like ‘how are you going to stay on top of my search.’ Or ‘is this your full-time job,’ ‘how many homes have you sold in the past 12 months.’ You don’t want your sale linked with the agent’s ability to pay their bills.
It’s also important to be mindful of programs that give you money to work with them. Discount brokers offer discount service. When you’re looking to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars, look for the best guidance, because this is all about protecting your investment.
