Free Pools within Walking Distance of the CTA

On a hot summer day, the best place to stay cool and work on your tan is a pool. Chicago has 78 public pools and the majority are outdoor pools. If you drive, getting to a pool is easy, but for those of us that use public transportation, the options are a bit more limited. We compiled a list to make it easier for you! And if you’re new to the city, we will also go over what to expect before you go.

Outdoor pools are open all summer through Labor Day. City pools all work on a schedule, so be sure to check the pool schedule on the Chicago Park District website before you go. The schedule includes times for lap swims, adult open swims, swim classes, swim team practices, and youth and family open swims; some locations even have time allotted specifically for parents with toddlers. Note, that in order to swim laps at most Chicago Park District pools, you will need to purchase a lap swim membership for the season (you can use this pass at any CPD pool). You can register for lap swim passes here, and register for swim lessons, swim club or aquatic exercise classes by following this link

When you arrive, you will likely be greeted by a pool attendant at the entrance. Be sure to bring your ID to prove you are a Chicago resident and confirm your age. Also bring a towel, flip flops, and a lock to secure your belongings in a locker. Before entering the pool, you should take a quick rinse to keep the pool as clean as possible. Lifeguards are always on duty and can help you if you have any questions.

Whether you are an avid swimmer or just want to splash around and catch some rays, there is something on the schedule for everyone. Outside of outdoor pools, the city also has 28 indoor pools and 14 Chicago Public School pools with community programs. The list below has some of the outdoor pools that are walking distance from a train. Click the links below to see the hours of operation and access schedules for each pool. NOTE: The Robey has a small rooftop pool that you can splash in while sipping on a cocktail. It’s pretty small, but also a great option and is only a 2 minute walk from the Damen Blue Line stop.
